THE WINKY&DUTCH #TBT MOMENT IS ABOUT STYLE CIRCA 1994

It's 1994 and the recycling movement is just now
gaining momentum in the fashion world.  Meanwhile, somewhere in St. Louis.........

Recycling with a Sense of Style

    St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO), November 24, 1994

Becky Homan Post-Dispatch Fashion Editor, St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

Jimthe designer for Winky Dutch, makes vests from vintage college pennants.
ISAAC MIZRAHI decorates dresses with big sequins cut from aluminum cans.
Koos van den Akker styles coat from collection of old men's neckties.
They're recycling, these designers of fashion.
And New York's Fashion Institute of Technology couldn't be happier.
The institute Manhattan's, and perhaps the country's, biggest school for training in fashion design and related fields has launched the exhibit: "Hello Again: Recycling for the Real World."
The exhibit has received good notices, far beyond the boundaries of New York. And it runs through Jan. at the school, Seventh Avenue and 27th Street.
"It's subject I've been very interested in," says the institute's museum director, Dorothy Twining Globus. "And this is very timely moment to take it on."
Besides the couture items of reworked clothing, there is furniture, sporting equipment, tools, jewelry, stationery and household goods designed and produced from soda bottles, out-of-date maps, melted engine blocks, glass bottles, rubber tires and old computer circuit boards.
And all 350 of the items are done with certain sense of style.
nearby reading room, meanwhile, features more information on the works such as Van den Akker's "coat of memories," made from ties of the father of an institute curator.
Tips on how to recycle these and other things also are available in the reading room.
The exhibit is not without its problems, however, says Globus. "Our bale of aluminum cans was stolen by scrap dealer," she says of one piece of outdoor sculpture. It was quickly retrieved bysecurity guards.
The exhibit itself may not get recycled.  "There are no plans to circulate it," says Globus, although few institutions have expressed some interest. But the intricate installations makemoving it costly.

STORES WE LOVE, A WINKY&DUTCH FAVORITE

WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT TENDER BUTTONS

TENDER BUTTONS IS 1 IDEA, SUPPORTING 1 NICHE, ON 4 FLOORS OF 1 STORE

Winky&Dutch product categories also include buttons, so it's no surprise we have worked with Tender Buttons for years, but that's just one of many reasons we love this store.  They have been in business for 50 years, thats 50 years of serious dedication when you consider it is all buttons, all the time. Their expertise and passion for this niche business is unmatched. They are recognized annually by print & digital publications ranging from New York Magazine, Gothamist, to travel books dedicated to finding the most impressive & unique destinations to see/experience in New York City. No one serves their niche more diligently or passionately than Millicent Safro and her team at Tender Buttons.

In the opinion of this blogger/writer, the most obvious reason to love this store, is the answer I received from the owner of Tender Buttons, Millicent Safro when I asked her how, after 50+ years in business did she continue moving forward with such apparent joy and enthusiasm. Without pause, she exclaimed, "Because every single day is a visual delight."   This is why we love Tender Buttons.

#TBT FLASHBACK: IN SEARCH OF SWEET TREATS WINKY&DUTCH FINDS A SWEET PARTNERSHIP INSTEAD!

    TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE
Is having one piece of candy better than having two? Not in our world.
In our ongoing quest to keep the Artistic Asset Library and the Archives up to date we discovered the artwork for one of our favorite sweet spots in New York City, DYLAN'S CANDY BAR.  Shortly after their first store opening, WINKY&DUTCH had the pleasure of working with the team on their inspiring new concept.  A shop dedicated to the splendors of candy infused with pop culture and art that would eventually turn into a lifestyle brand.  These are ideas and concepts WINKY&DUTCH understands completely, so to DYLAN'S CANDY BAR we went.
Now almost 13 years later the newest location of DYLAN'S CANDY BAR is soon to open in the historic Union Square area. True to their commitment to infuse the store with pop culture and art, the store will be located in what was once the Andy Warhol Factory building.
At one time, WINKY&DUTCH had an office in One Union Square, in the same neighborhood of the new DYLAN'S CANDY BAR.  This new store opening combined with the rediscovery of our collaboration, feels like an awesome opportunity for two New York City brands to collaborate again.
Because two is better than one, right?
