THE WINKY&DUTCH #TBT MOMENT IS ABOUT STYLE CIRCA 1994

It's 1994 and the recycling movement is just now
gaining momentum in the fashion world.  Meanwhile, somewhere in St. Louis.........

Recycling with a Sense of Style

    St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO), November 24, 1994

Becky Homan Post-Dispatch Fashion Editor, St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

Jimthe designer for Winky Dutch, makes vests from vintage college pennants.
ISAAC MIZRAHI decorates dresses with big sequins cut from aluminum cans.
Koos van den Akker styles coat from collection of old men's neckties.
They're recycling, these designers of fashion.
And New York's Fashion Institute of Technology couldn't be happier.
The institute Manhattan's, and perhaps the country's, biggest school for training in fashion design and related fields has launched the exhibit: "Hello Again: Recycling for the Real World."
The exhibit has received good notices, far beyond the boundaries of New York. And it runs through Jan. at the school, Seventh Avenue and 27th Street.
"It's subject I've been very interested in," says the institute's museum director, Dorothy Twining Globus. "And this is very timely moment to take it on."
Besides the couture items of reworked clothing, there is furniture, sporting equipment, tools, jewelry, stationery and household goods designed and produced from soda bottles, out-of-date maps, melted engine blocks, glass bottles, rubber tires and old computer circuit boards.
And all 350 of the items are done with certain sense of style.
nearby reading room, meanwhile, features more information on the works such as Van den Akker's "coat of memories," made from ties of the father of an institute curator.
Tips on how to recycle these and other things also are available in the reading room.
The exhibit is not without its problems, however, says Globus. "Our bale of aluminum cans was stolen by scrap dealer," she says of one piece of outdoor sculpture. It was quickly retrieved bysecurity guards.
The exhibit itself may not get recycled.  "There are no plans to circulate it," says Globus, although few institutions have expressed some interest. But the intricate installations makemoving it costly.

#TBT TRACKS WINKY&DUTCH TO THE 1940'S & INSPIRES US ALL

WHY ARE WE ONLY INSPIRED BY SOME THINGS AND NOT OTHERS?
After spending weeks archiving & organizing years of the Winky&Dutch Corporate history we say, the reason we are moved only by some things vs. all things is because some things or experiences are more impactful to us than others.  Simply said,  we are inspired by what moves us or triggers an emotional reaction and it varies by person.
The color in the vintage ad for 7up is amazing
We have gathered a few categories or personalities who trigger those reactions & connections in many people.
Warhol - love him or loathe him he triggers something!
No matter how you look at her, you always look twice for sure!

#TBT FLASHBACK: IN SEARCH OF SWEET TREATS WINKY&DUTCH FINDS A SWEET PARTNERSHIP INSTEAD!

    TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE
Is having one piece of candy better than having two? Not in our world.
In our ongoing quest to keep the Artistic Asset Library and the Archives up to date we discovered the artwork for one of our favorite sweet spots in New York City, DYLAN'S CANDY BAR.  Shortly after their first store opening, WINKY&DUTCH had the pleasure of working with the team on their inspiring new concept.  A shop dedicated to the splendors of candy infused with pop culture and art that would eventually turn into a lifestyle brand.  These are ideas and concepts WINKY&DUTCH understands completely, so to DYLAN'S CANDY BAR we went.
Now almost 13 years later the newest location of DYLAN'S CANDY BAR is soon to open in the historic Union Square area. True to their commitment to infuse the store with pop culture and art, the store will be located in what was once the Andy Warhol Factory building.
At one time, WINKY&DUTCH had an office in One Union Square, in the same neighborhood of the new DYLAN'S CANDY BAR.  This new store opening combined with the rediscovery of our collaboration, feels like an awesome opportunity for two New York City brands to collaborate again.
Because two is better than one, right?

FATHER'S DAY, IT'S NOT OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER.

FATHER'S DAY, IT'S NOT OVER YET.
Let his holiday continue through the night!  Make him comfortable in his favorite spot!
Make sure he has the necessities.
    Prepare his favorite drink!
Let him have one of his favorite treats.
Most importantly give him time to kick back, relax and ponder the good things in his life.
    Happy Father's Day from Winky&Dutch

TODAY THE WINKY&DUTCH #TBT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: AUTUMN & WINTER 1990

THE GLAMOUR AND THE FASHION OF #TBT
Everybody loves the Glamour of Glamour Magazine.  First things first, can you say, "Holy Giant Shoulderpads"?    No question about it, this was one of our first major fashion magazine editorial credits. It was the post earring worn on the models upper ear in the shot.  We especially love how the model is wearing a mash up of everything from Chanel to Jordache Jeans, to LIFE PRESERVER SIZED SHOULDER PADS!!

FASHION IS FOR TODAY, BUT AN ICON IS FOREVER
Winky&Dutch remembers the days of the NYTIMES Sunday Edition -  A full week of reading and exploration.  Here, in an article by Deborah Hofmann, Winky&Dutch is cited for doing their part in, not just holding on to the past but, putting a fresh twist on it, making it relevant. We did this by taking the lenticular, a.k.a. the Winky, a.k.a. the 3-D images we perfected in the 60's, and turned them into anything and everything one could ever want.  Curious as to what a lenticular is?  Stay tuned later today and you will know - you will see -  and could possibly own one.
